I'll give you my $0.02 as an owner of a 2006 X3 3.0i (m-sport, manual, premium, xenons, premium stereo, PDC). I'd look for a 3.0. The 2.5 is probably fine, but the 3.0 is really a great engine and seems more appropriate to a 4K pound car. After driving my 2006 Mini Cooper S convertible, the X3 feels slow. Again, it's the weight.

30d is a single turbo, 40d a twin with the M50d being a triple. They’re all 3.0 litre straight sixes. It’s mainly more bhp and torque. 40d & M50d will have increasing tax as you would expect, and slightly worse economy. They do however come with steadily larger ‘grin factors’ as they get increasingly quicker.
